Officers charged Williams with first-degree homicide by vehicle, hit-and-run, and failure to aid and DUI less safe.
Friday’s crash is in keeping with a concerning trend. Pedestrian accidents are on the rise in Georgia. In 2017, 260 pedestrians were killed, up from 232 in the previous year. The death toll in 2017 was twice that of 2011.
A study by AAA found that one of the reasons why these crashes are so severe is that drivers often fail to stop and offer aid. Georgia ranked fourth in the country for fatal hit-and-run crashes in 2016. A record-high 2,049 people died in hit-and-run crashes across the country that year with 72 of them losing their lives in Georgia.
