Atlanta – Driver charged after a fatal crash on Langford Parkway, police say a woman was killed in the wee hours of Friday morning after being hit by a drunk driver along Langford Parkway in southwest Atlanta.

The fatal crash happened just after 2 a.m. near the intersection with Dodson Drive.

Police arrived on the scene to find the body of a dead woman in the roadway. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

However, the authorities said the driver who hit her was 42-year-old Alvin Williams. He initially left the scene of the crash but later returned.

Williams reportedly told officers he left the scene because he was not sure what he struck.

Meanwhile, police said Williams appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He smelled of alcohol and struggled to maintain his balance. As resulte, he was given a field sobriety test which confirmed he was intoxicated, police stated.

Officers charged Williams with first-degree homicide by vehicle, hit-and-run, and failure to aid and DUI less safe.

Friday’s crash is in keeping with a concerning trend. Pedestrian accidents are on the rise in Georgia. In 2017, 260 pedestrians were killed, up from 232 in the previous year. The death toll in 2017 was twice that of 2011.

A study by AAA found that one of the reasons why these crashes are so severe is that drivers often fail to stop and offer aid. Georgia ranked fourth in the country for fatal hit-and-run crashes in 2016. A record-high 2,049 people died in hit-and-run crashes across the country that year with 72 of them losing their lives in Georgia.
